Congratulations To Student Maia Vegar!

Congratulations to student Maia Vegar!

Congratulations to our student, Maia Vegar, who came third in the North Shore Competition Society’s Becroft Aria.  Her achievement is all the more commendable as she climbed out of a ‘flu and laryngitis attack on the day of the Prelims for the Becroft Aria.  Well done Maia!!! The calibre of the contestants was very high again this year and we send our congratulations to first place winner Edward Laurenson, and in second place Madison Nonoa.

This important competition provides an invaluable step for our young singers. It is fiercely competed for by our most talented singers, not only for the monetary cash prize of $5,000, but also the prize of automatic entry into the prestigious McDonald Sydney Eisteddfod Aria Competition.  We are particularly proud that of the eight finalists in the Becroft Aria, three were Auckland Opera Studio (AOS) students, so as well as Maia, we must also congratulate Joel Amosa and Grace Park on their achievements.  It is very exciting for us here at AOS when we see our young students obtain success in the early stages of their careers.

Maia is an extremely talented young singer who has consistently been a top place getter in our New Zealand Competitions – winner of both the Christchurch and Dunedin Aria Competitions, 2nd in the Wellington Aria Competition sponsored by the Dame Malvina Major Foundation and 3rd in the Napier Aria.

Furthermore she has been personally selected by world renowned tenor and vocal coach, Dennis O’Neill CBE, to attend his 2014/15 Academic Year at Cardiff University.  This opportunity means Maia will be following in the footsteps of Moses Mackay, Pene and Amitai Pati, Kawiti Waetford, Marlena Devoe, Isabella Moore and Alexander Wilson.

So watch this space for more on Maia – she is a passionate hard working young woman who will grow into an important singer… it is just a question of time and good advice.
